The Historical Environment

The town of Chucena is located in the County of the province of Huelva where there are historical references to the cultivation of vines and winemaking as far back as Tartessian and Roman times. Already in the 13th century, King Alfonso in the area promoting the cultivation of vines, being mandatory in all its lands between the 16th-17th centuries. In the municipal archive of Chucena, files from the time are preserved with the explicit phrase “leases of vines” not of land. The first wine destined for America would leave the County of Huelva, with evidence of the manufacture in Chucena of vessels and jars for transport to the New World.

Geographic Environment

The designation of origin “Condado de Huelva” covers the wine production of what was called Condado de Niebla, former Señorío de los Guzmanes and which is currently made up of 14 municipalities, all of them close to the Doñana National Park, in the surroundings of these Magnificent lands that Chucena is located. In this privileged enclave, a favorable climate is maintained for the planting of vineyards with mild winters and springs and long, warm summers, with many hours of sun and a humidity level of 60% to 80% due to its proximity to the Atlantic coast.

The Cooperative

The Ntra. Sra. de la Estrella S.C.A de Chucena cooperative was founded in 1957 thanks to the union of different producers in the municipality, since by 1960 there were about 70 stores in the town, including wineries and wineries in a population of 1,500 inhabitants. We currently have 140 producer partners and an area of ​​160 hectares.

Our wine is protected by the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin “Condado de Huelva”, created in 1979, which sets the guidelines to follow, supervises its correct execution and qualifies those wines that are produced under its strict quality criteria, using the appropriate techniques both in the handling of the grapes “only healthy grapes with a minimum degree of natural ripeness of 10º”, as well as in the control of fermentation, following traditional practices applied with modern technology, and the conservation and production processes of must wine and white wine.

The wines produced in this Cooperative are presented with the “vino de Chucena” brand and because they scrupulously respect all the established oenological and organoleptic conditions, they are classified as “VCPRD” wines, of the highest quality according to the term applied by the Community Regulations that encompass the four levels of the system of Protection of Origin and Quality of Spanish wines (Quality Wines with Geographical Indication, Denomination of Origin, Qualified Denomination of Origin and Pago Wines).
